Cape Town is one of those cities that tends to exceed every expectation. But like anywhere, a little local knowledge goes a long way. Here are the 10 things we wish every first-time visitor knew before they arrived — straight from our guides who live and work here every day.

1. 🌬️ The Wind is Real — and Glorious

Cape Town’s famous south-easterly wind — affectionately known as the Cape Doctor — can blow strongly, especially in summer. It keeps the city cool and the air fresh, but it can also close the Table Mountain cable car at short notice. Always have a backup plan and pack a windproof layer, even in midsummer.

2. 🏔️ Book Table Mountain Early — and Have a Backup Day

Table Mountain is the centrepiece of Cape Town — but it’s at the mercy of the weather. The cable car closes when winds are too strong or visibility is poor. Always pre-book your ticket online and build a backup day into your itinerary. First thing in the morning is typically the best time to visit — clearer skies and shorter queues.

3. 🚗 You Really Need a Car (or a Guide)

Cape Town is not a walkable city in the way that European cities are. The attractions are spread across a large area and public transport is limited in tourist areas. Renting a car gives you freedom — but the roads, signage and parking can be tricky for first-timers. A private guided tour is honestly the easiest and most enjoyable way to get around, especially for day trips.

4. 🌊 The Atlantic is COLD

The beaches along the Atlantic Seaboard — Camps Bay, Clifton, Llandudno — are stunningly beautiful. But the water is cold year-round (typically 12–16°C) thanks to the Benguela Current. For warmer swimming, head to the False Bay side — Muizenberg, Fish Hoek and Boulders Beach have considerably warmer water.

5. ☀️ The Sun is Stronger Than You Think

South Africa sits at a high UV index — even on overcast days. Sunburn creeps up quickly, especially at altitude on Table Mountain or out on the water. Pack a high-factor sunscreen (SPF 50+), a hat and sunglasses, and reapply regularly. Your skin will thank you.

6. 💳 Card is King — But Carry Some Cash

Credit and debit cards are widely accepted throughout Cape Town. However, it’s always worth carrying some Rand cash for markets, smaller restaurants, tips and parking attendants. ATMs are widely available — use those at shopping centres or banks rather than standalone machines for safety.

7. 🦓 Wildlife is Closer Than You Think

You don’t need to go on safari to see wildlife in Cape Town. Penguins at Boulders Beach, baboons at Cape Point (don’t feed them — they’re wild and very clever!), Southern Right Whales in False Bay (June–November), seals at Hout Bay, and an extraordinary variety of birds throughout the Cape Peninsula. Cape Town’s wildlife encounters are genuinely world-class.

8. 🍷 The Wine is World Class — and Very Affordable

The Cape Winelands — Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Constantia — produce wines that compete with the very best in the world. And thanks to the favourable exchange rate, tasting world-class wines at cellar door prices is one of the great joys of visiting Cape Town. Don’t leave without spending at least one day in the Winelands.

9. 🕐 Things Run on “African Time”

Cape Town has a wonderfully relaxed pace — which is part of its charm. But it does mean that things occasionally run a little later than scheduled and not everything operates with Swiss precision. Embrace it, build flexibility into your day, and you’ll love the laid-back vibe. Getting stressed about small delays will only spoil your experience!

10. 🤝 The People Will Blow You Away

Perhaps the biggest surprise for first-time visitors is the warmth, humour and friendliness of Cape Town’s people. From your guide to your waiter to the person you ask for directions — Cape Tonians are genuinely welcoming and proud of their city.
