Where to Stay in Cape Town Without Breaking the Bank
One of the things we love most about Cape Town is that it genuinely caters for every budget. Yes, there are jaw-dropping clifftop villas and five-star hotels — but there are also some wonderfully charming, comfortable and affordable places to stay that won’t make your bank account weep. Because honestly? We’d much rather you spend your money on incredible experiences than on unnecessary room upgrades. Here’s our local guide to where to stay without overspending.
🏨 First — Where Should You Stay in Cape Town?
Before we get into specific hotels, it’s worth thinking about location — because where you base yourself in Cape Town makes a real difference to your experience. Here’s our quick neighbourhood guide:
- Sea Point & Mouille Point — our top recommendation for most visitors. Excellent value, right on the Atlantic Seaboard promenade, fantastic restaurants and very safe. Easy access to the City Bowl and V&A Waterfront.
- City Bowl / De Waterkant — right in the heart of the action. Great for walking to the Waterfront, Bo-Kaap and the city’s best restaurants. Buzzy and convenient.
- Green Point — quiet, residential and very well-located. Walking distance to the Waterfront and the promenade. A favourite with repeat visitors.
- Observatory & Woodstock — Cape Town’s creative, artsy suburbs. More affordable than the Atlantic Seaboard, great food scene, but you’ll need transport to get around.
- Muizenberg & Simon’s Town — beautiful if you want a quieter beach-town vibe, but you’ll need a car or be happy with a longer Uber to the city’s main attractions.
🌊 Our Favourite Affordable Hotels in Cape Town
1. La Splendida — Mouille Point ⭐
If we had to pick one hotel that consistently over-delivers for its price, La Splendida would be near the top of the list. Tucked between the Green Point Urban Park and Cape Town’s beloved Sea Point promenade, this intimate 24-room boutique property punches well above its weight. Choose between sea, side or mountain views — the sea view rooms are worth the small premium. The on-site restaurant Sotano is a genuine local favourite for Mediterranean food and lazy Sunday brunches. The promenade is literally on your doorstep for morning walks — and you’re just minutes from the Waterfront.
2. Old Bank Hotel — City Centre ⭐
For those who want to be right in the heart of Cape Town, the Old Bank Hotel is a real gem. Housed in a beautifully restored century-old heritage building in the CBD, it combines genuine Cape Town history with modern comfort and style. It’s the kind of place that feels special the moment you walk through the door — and at these prices, it’s remarkable value. Perfect for city explorers who want to walk to everything.
3. One Thibault — City Centre
One Thibault is a sleek, contemporary aparthotel in the CBD that’s particularly good value for longer stays or groups. The self-catering apartments are well-equipped and spacious, with great city views from the upper floors. It’s within easy walking distance of the Waterfront, and having your own kitchen means you can save money on meals while still being brilliantly located. A smart, practical choice for independent travellers.
4. Protea Hotel Fire & Ice — De Waterkant
Fire & Ice is one of Cape Town’s most fun and reliably good-value hotels. Quirky, colourful and full of personality — it’s the kind of place that puts a smile on your face from the moment you arrive. The rooftop pool is a genuine highlight, the restaurant buzzes with locals and guests alike, and the location in De Waterkant puts you within easy reach of both the V&A Waterfront and the City Bowl. Great for younger travellers and those who want a bit of energy and atmosphere.
5. Greenway Woods Resort — Constantia
If you’d prefer to escape the city buzz and stay somewhere green and peaceful, Greenway Woods in Constantia is a lovely option. Set among lush gardens in Cape Town’s wine-producing suburb, it offers comfortable chalets and rooms at very reasonable rates. You’re close to the Constantia wine estates, Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens and the Constantia Valley walking trails — and just 20 minutes from the city centre by car. A wonderful base for wine lovers and nature seekers.
6. Simon’s Town Quayside Hotel — Simon’s Town
For something completely different, the Quayside Hotel in the charming naval village of Simon’s Town is a real find. Right on the harbour, with views across False Bay, it’s peaceful, characterful and wonderfully affordable. You’re walking distance from Boulders Beach and the penguin colony, and the False Bay coastline for warmer swimming. It’s further from the city centre — but if you’re with us on a guided day tour, that’s not a problem at all. A lovely option for those wanting a quieter, more scenic base.
💡 Our Tips for Getting the Best Value on Accommodation
- Book directly with the hotel where possible — you often get better rates and more flexibility than through third-party booking sites
- Consider guesthouses and B&Bs — Cape Town has some wonderful owner-run guesthouses that offer genuinely personal service at very competitive prices
- Travel in shoulder season — March to May and September to October offer excellent value with great weather and fewer crowds
- Don’t pay for a pool you won’t use — the ocean and beaches are free. Save the pool premium for somewhere warmer
- Location matters more than room size — a smaller room in Sea Point beats a bigger room in an inconvenient suburb every time
- Ask us for recommendations — we know Cape Town’s accommodation scene inside out and are always happy to point you in the right direction for your budget and travel style
🏠 A note from our guides: We always tell our guests — don’t spend your entire budget on accommodation. Cape Town’s magic is in what you do, not where you sleep. A comfortable, well-located hotel at a reasonable price, combined with a personalised guided tour, will give you a far richer experience than an expensive hotel where you’re too tired (or too broke!) to go out and explore.
